'Lift011' Georgia looking for partners in electronic music A request for music exchange from Ruso Didebulidze in Georgia: 'Our firm "Art Studio Mix" was founded in 2000 to support the development = of the electronic (club) music in Georgia. At first we were finding partners who would be interested in support of club = culture, but unfortunately Georgian businessmen are only interested in making supermarkets, restaurants and pe= trol business. In 2003 of August we founded a private club "LIFT 011", where we gave opportunity to main and v= ery popular DJ's and VJ's to show their creativity. It must be noticed, that the LIFT club is the only club in Tbi= lisi (Capital of Georgia), which chooses the above music direction. We are functioning on the enthusiasm, one brings a turn-t= able, the second his personal computer, another brings a projector, compressor etc. One volunteer and member of ou= r club is now making the website of the club, where information and photos will be available. DJ's and VJ's are wo= rking without any salary; but still we require more support and help. We are eager to organize festivals, where Georgian = and invited DJ's could show their creativity to the people, we would like foreign DJs to arrive and play in our club, b= ut all these is connected to the expenses, which we couldn't allow. Also we'd like to promote discs of our DJ's and spread = them in Georgia and outside of the country. If you are interested in developing club culture in Georgia and if you are sa= tisfied with our initial information and point of view, please inform us. We are looking forward to your reply.' For more information, check:http://www.falkor.org/news/btc%20developments.= htm Best wishes, Falkor Dear supporter, At last some good news! Barclays Bank has refused to provide a loan for the BTC pipeline =96 the first major private bank to say no to the project. Campaigners had been targeting the bank over the last month urging it not to become involved in such a controversial project. While this is great news, we now urgently need your help to ensure other private banks follow suit. Although the IFC and EBRD have now approved loans to the pipeline, they are only providing a minority of the finance. The largest portion will come from private banks =96 ie high-street banks like HSBC and Royal Bank of Scotland (which owns NatWest). These banks will make their decisions on whether to provide loans next week! Decision day is 20th December. They are considering providing loans to the pipeline despite the fact that it should be excluded by environmental rules they have signed up to, called the Equator Principles. Please email them urgently to tell them not to finance the pipeline. If you bank at any of these banks, then you could also phone your branch, and tell them about your concerns. A suggested email text is below =96 but feel free to write it in your own words; in fact, the more personal the letter, the better. Thanks once again for your support, To send to Royal Bank of Scotland, email: investor.relations@rbs.co.uk To send to HSBC, email: customer.relations@hsbc.com Dear Sir/Madam I am writing to you to express my concerns about the Baku-T'bilisi- Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline, which I understand that your bank is considering financing. I am deeply concerned about serious impacts the pipeline will have on the environment, on regional tensions, and on people living on the pipeline route. Your bank is a signatory to the Equator Principles, a voluntary set of guidelines designed to prevent project financing being given to the most environmentally and socially damaging projects. Research by NGOs has found that the BTC pipeline violates the Principles on numerous counts. I urge you to show that your commitment to the Equator Principles is genuine by not supporting projects such as BTC which violate them. Barclays has refused to provide a loan for the BTC project =96 we urge to follow suit. The BTC pipeline is a political project sponsored by the USA, designed to undermine Iran and Russia, while boosting the regimes of Azerbaijan and Georgia. The recent toppling of the Georgian regime shows the instability of the political approach. Azerbaijan=92s Presidential election this autumn is widely recognised to have been rigged, and was followed by a brutal clampdown against opposition parties. It is not an appropriate role for a bank such as yours to participate in such geopolitical interference. The region is highly unstable, and this project stands to exacerbate conflicts. For example, Azerbaijan=92s new President Ilham Aliyev hinted in his inauguration speech that he would use oil revenues to build up the army and restart the war with Armenia. The pipeline looks set to cause major human rights abuses. In Turkey, it will be guarded by the notorious state Gendarmerie, which has a record for some of the worst atrocities in the region. It seems BP, the lead company behind the pipeline, has not learned its lessons from the human rights problems with its operations in Colombia. Research by environment and human rights groups has shown that the pipeline will damage livelihoods of local people living on the route. Compensation for lost land has been inadequate, and many people stand to be forced into the city slums as their land becomes unusable. Meanwhile, massive corruption will prevent any of the revenues reaching those who need them. I assume that your bank has rigorously assessed the BTC pipeline=92s compliance with the Equator Principles. Please send me a copy of this analysis. Please reassure me that you will not provide a loan to the BTC project. Yours faithfully, ------------------------------- Stichting Falkor I.C.Y. P.O. The article 'Gold mining in Rumania: Getting to the bottom of the story' by Justin Hyatt, taken from ROOTS (magazine from Aseed Europe) October/November 2003 Falkor I.C.Y. ------------------- 1. Join the Rosia Montana campaign in Romania (from www.rosiamontana.org:) Gold has been mined at Rosia Montana, in the Apuseni mountains of West-Central Romania, since pre-historic times. The area's riches attracted several foreign powers including the Romans. These powers carried off the precious metals to Rome, Vienna, Budapest, Berlin but left behind what has become an historical and archaeological treasure of world class. The seams of precious metals have long been worked out but gold and silver are still dispersed in microscopic quantities throughout the geology of the area. The project proposal is that by blasting and pulverising the landscape, the invisible gold and silver could be exposed to hazardous cyanide compounds that would separate them from the rock. The scenery would be devastated, hills transformed into massive craters in a toxic, sterile desert. This is a populated area. The illegal process of forced resettlement has already begun. Will these unique historical and archaeological remains be obliterated and people forced to leave their homes? (the request letter:) Your help is needed! The consultation process for Rosia Montana has opened and we need many, many NGOs to register as interested parties. Under Romanian law each and every body has the right to be included as such party. We would there fore like to encourage you ALL to register - it doesn't cost you anything and is really important for the campaign. It will show the Romanian authorities as well how much the project is monitored more info at www.rosiamontana.org). We look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely yours, name ------------ 3. from ROOTS October/November 2003 : Gold mining in Rumania: Getting to the bottom of the story It all started out as a harmless exercise in investigative journalism. From our summer's gathering in Romania, where about 30 writers from around Eastern Europe met to produce our magazine, called Plotki, nine of us broke off to join the interest group of our preference. Our destination was Rosia Montana, potential site of Europe's largest open cast gold mine. We were pretty surethat we didn't like Montana Gold Corporation", the Canadian-backed company (Gabriel Resources) that has blue-prints to make four extremely large pits, in which they plan to dig for gold in the next ten to fifteen years, in a process which will knock the town of Rosia Montana off the map and turn the entire area into a replica of the moon's crater system in the process. The employees at the company's headquarters in Alba Iulia, were determined to sway our opinion on the matter. Touting their scientific expertise on the issue, they did their best to present their project as a resounding triumph for the Rumanian economy, which will dramatically boost local development and even clean up the area, which has already suffered environmental damage due to past mining and is just down the road from Zlatna, an extremely polluted industrial town. Already familiar with the gold mine tragedy of Baia Mare, we were concerned about the use of cyanide. If anything goes wrong here, the results could be far worse than in 2000, when cyanide polluted the Tisza/Tisa river and created trans-national havoc. A failure in the dam here, which would protect a tailing pond ten times the size of the one in Baia Mare, would not only entail Romania once more exporting pollution through its rivers, but it would wipe out the whole area, including the nearby city of Abrud. We were assured that the use of the latest technology available would render such a disaster scenario impossible, so we were told, that would be impossible. All of our other questions also had a handy solution, and by the time we staggered out of there, the thought "I've just been brainwashed" flooded through my mind. We next visited Rosia Montana itself, met the opposition to the project as well as the townsfolk. The village is already being hit hard by the corporation. They are actively buying up the houses and depopulating the village. Many services have already stopped, such as that of the dentist and the doctor. Although food can still be bought, funerals and the school will likely be the next things to stop working. One shop-keeper was too shy to share her opinions with us as just that moment another woman, who was known to be supportive of the project, was in the store. Thus we could sense that the town was quite divided on the issue. Of the people who had stayed, was it because they opposed the destruction of their community, tooth and nail, or because they were hoping to bargain for more cash from the Gold corporation? "About half and half" according to Eugen David, a Rosia Montana resident and president of Alburnus Maior, the organization that is fighting against the Gold corporation. The mayor and most of the town hall representatives have sided with the corporation, which is not hugely surprising, given the fact that they also have jobs linked with the corporation. It all bore the hint of a classic case of corruption and buying out the right people. The company, of course, is very careful not to allow for any direct links; there are no cases of homeowners being pressured into giving up their homes. A regional newspaper has become virtually a mouthpiece for the company's interests. For a while, they would issue a free supplement to the Rosia Montana community on Thursdays, highlighting all of the benefits of a Gold mine. At the end of our investigative days the analytical days began and we had a hard time knowing what to believe anymore. Most of us still clung to the notion that such a project could have damaging consequences, to the local area possibly and to the town of Rosia Montana quite obviously. We could see for ourselves the problems mounting there. What struck us the most powerfully perhaps, was the sensation that what is taking place is both a very important issue but also very complicated - there are many different opinions and many different interests. We had difficulties to define our own standpoint very clearly. What if the corporation really does consist of a bunch of guys who just want to make an honest buck and in the meantime bring necessary development to the region and provide a host of jobs? Politically, environmentally, socially and emotionally, it is a very charged issue. Who can one believe? Who has the most accurate information? Hard enough dealing with these issues as a professed environmentalist, what about your average citizen? Just a matter of what newspaper first reaches his or her hands? There were many more unanswered questions, many things we still wanted to find out. Reflecting on the issues at a basic philosophical level, and consulting my own set of principles, for me the choice was clear. But getting there involved soul-searching and hard work. Rosia Montana Gold Corporation is running out of time. They still don't have the license to dig and their investors are getting impatient. They never realized that it would take as much propaganda and media work as it is taking. The problem of racial discrimination in the so-called =91transition countr= ies=92 of Europe (CEE/CIS countries) has taken extreme character during the past decade. Extreme nat= ionalism has grown and right-wing governments have occupied most of the power positions, while xe= nophobic and racist ideas are very much at the base of mainstream public opinion. This is a call for organizing venues within the World Bank Boycott speaker's tour in Europe. If you would like to have us come and speak in your city, university or community, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can arrange our schedule. Apart from the Speaker's tour there would be plenty of opportunities for actions and events, which we can try organizing in a coordinated manner. A good focus would be the Extractive Industries Review's final report. As many of you are aware the World Bank's management refuted the final recommendations of the Extractive Industries Review, in the point for ban on financing for oil until 2008. The World Bank's board decision on the report will take place in April. See announcement below. Cheers, Filka The World Bank:-Time to Retire Two weeks before the Annual Spring Meeting and 60th Anniversary of the World Bank and IMF, the World Bank Disinvestment Campaign of A SEED Europe launch a Speakers Tour in Netherlands, Germany and France. The team of the World Bank Disinvestment campaign and colleagues from the Global South and Europe will speak on the World Bank's role in global politics and development, addressing the following issues: * Structure, mandate and global impact of the World Bank, * World Bank's conditioned lending policies and advocacy for one single and right gateway to development of the Third World Countries, * World Bank's financing for large-scale dams and fossil fuel industry clashing with the poverty reduction objective. The World Bank Disinvestment campaign of A SEED Europe is a global initiative calling the World Bank for: * debt cancellation, * end of conditionality policies of (structural adjustment), * a ban on financing for environmentally and socially destructive projects The campaign involves political and financial exposure of World Bank Bonds, through the selling of which the Bank gain up to 80% of its funding. By bringing forward that notion to public institutions and socially responsible investors who are potential funders of the World Bank and its policies, we call for ethical disinvestment from the bonds of the World Bank until the latter demonstrates substantial improvements in its human rights and environmental record and answers adequately the three demands set above. The uniting issue for global groups campaigning on the World Bank this year is the Bank's 60th anniversary and new presidential elections. Under the "Time to Retire" call global groups will expose and question the legitimacy and effectiveness of the World Bank's sixty years of "poverty alleviation". A SEED Europe will join the call, questioning the ethical grounds of investment in World Bank Bonds and providing a set of practical tools to address the issue from your own communities. Please submit your applications to kukuriku 2004@freemail.hu! The details and application form below: Call for applicants Kukuriku 2004 Environmental Consciousness as an Attitude towards Life 11-21 July 2004, Hungary ZOFI, the Hungarian Young Greens are preparing a summer art workshop for young people on the basis of green values. Our organisation promotes a new alternative vision, which focuses on creativity, openness, and diversity. We believe in a more harmonious relationship between society and the environment. In order to achieve these goals, we organize campaigns and direct actions on various issues; we run an activist club in Budapest; and we are involved in environmental education as well. We believe that a certain artistic approach is part of the responsible ecological way of thinking and behaviour. We think that art has a key role in understanding our environment. The aim of the summer art workshop is neither to be just "artistic" nor to be just "green". We would like to present life as a whole, and spend ten very active days together, working to express this. We would like to observe nature as an abstract piece of art. During the camp, we will remain continuously aware of our natural surroundings. This involves not only the workshops, but the practical aspects of the camp as well. We have chosen the most sustainable solutions in creating the camp facilities. We are inviting participants between the age of 18-25. Having experience in art is not a requirement, if you are interested in it, it is enough. We encourage people who have experience in artwork to give their input to the event by sharing their skills and ideas. The camp is international - 30 people from six countries will get to know each other and work creatively together. Communication and workshops are conducted in English, therefore participants should have a good working knowledge of this language. In order to ensure the quality of the workshops participants have to choose one from the four workshops offered to go deeper in that particular field of art during the ten days of the camp. Because of operational reasons we will ask you not to change workshops, so please consider your choices thoroughly. Beside the workshops, there will be other activities, such as discussions, lectures on various green topics, presentations of participating countries, activist and art movies, excursions, swimming in the nearby lake etc. The summer camp is situated in Kesztolc, which is a little village 40 kilometres North of Budapest (1 hour by train). From the location of the camp one can easily get to the main square of the village with a short walk, as well as to the forests of the beautiful Pilis Mountains. We offer the following workshops: l) Improvisational Dance and Puppet Play /led by Edit Jagodics, dancer and Julcsi puppet theatre artist/ The dance workshop covers various fields of improvisational dance. We move outward in concentric circles. We start off with the self, experimenting with senses and motions. Then we move to contact improvisation, playing with our weights in dialogues with each other. Finally we focus on the group, observing it functioning as a system. The puppet play part of this workshop will include the construction of one big puppet and animation of this gigantic creation. 2) Constructing and Playing Musical Instruments /led by Gergely Barna, musical instrument maker/ This workshop mainly aims to get deeper into human and other natural proportions, since the world of music and the different systems of music always have a hidden inner geometry. We will observe this abstract space in both exact and subjective ways and build instruments in a fitting style. We will build the instruments out of our own personalities, and improvise with them. We will also make excursions to the forest and to the village to collect materials and impressions. 3) Gerilla Propaganda Workshop /led by Tamas Kaszas, artist and Balazs Horvath, social activist/ The aim of the workshop is to find creative ways to express social messages. We will use various reproducable graphical techniques, such as linoleum cuts, wood carving, stencil, rubber stamps, stickers, cardboard, adhesive stickers, collage. We will employ the following methodology: first we talk about the issues that are of concern to the participants, we try to formulate these into clear messages, then we search for some suitable ways of expressing them and finally we get down to work and begin to create. 4) Land Art & Waste Art /led by Nico and Caroline from Switzerland, artists/ How can we shape the space that surrounds us? What is the impact of the environment to our selves? The workshop focuses on these questions. The concrete activity will be making some sculptures or installations in harmony with the natural environment. The workshop will also experiment with possible creative ways of using the waste produced by civilization. There is going to be a documentary film made about the whole Kukuriku event. The filmmakers will be Balazs Horvath and Sasha, and there is a possibility for you to join this little workshop, and participate in the shooting of the film. Towards the end of the camp all workshops will present to each other what they did and bring things together in a final integrated ensemble. Our project is supported by the Youth 2000-2006 program. Upon arrival, 70% of your travelling costs can be reimbursed. In addition to this, we charge you a relatively small registration fee of 90 ECOs.
